Lehi Dentists Ask: Healthy Mouth or Hell-Mouth?

Fans of Joss Whedon’s cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer may already be too familiar with the word Hellmouth, which is the place where all the negative energy are concentrated–place where vampires and demons continually wreak havoc.

Metaphorically, Hellmouth can also be a term used to describe your mouth. If you lack the proper oral care, there can be an overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth, which an result to periodontal and other gum diseases. Hellmouth is the opposite of a healthy mouth–one that has strong, white teeth, healthy gums, and breath that doesn’t stink.

In Whedon’s make-believe world, people would flee from the Hellmouth because of vampires, demons, and fallen gods. In real life, people stay away from those who have hellmouth, which is characterized by decayed teeth, bleeding gums, and bad breath.

In the fictitious Hellmouth, only one person stands in the way of demons and vampire: Buffy Summers, the vampire slayer, the chosen one. She is the sole person in the whole world who has the power and ability to fight and slay demons and vampires and keep the world safe. She keeps Hellmouth from being devoured by darkness.

To have healthy mouth, we need our own Buffy. We need something to slay the bacteria that causes plaque and tartar to form in our teeth, bleed the gums, and make our breath stink. Our slayer is proper oral care. If Buffy uses stakes, swords, and holy water to slay vampires, we use toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash to kill periodontal diseases.

Fortunately for us, we don’t need to wait for one person to save us from the harsh effects of periodontal diseases. We don’t need to wait for Buffy to slay our problems. We have the power to kill the cause of gum diseases. As long as we have the discipline and awareness, we can guarantee ourselves that our teeth, tongue, and gums are healthy. Brush after every meal and make sure to floss at least once a day. Use mouthwash to kill bacteria in your mouth and keeo your breath fresh. Make sure that you also visit your dentist regularly because nothing beats having an expert take charge of your oral health.

A healthy mouth is what you should have, not hellmouth. That is why you need to be dedicated to your oral care. Visit Lehi dentists regularly and you will never have to worry about getting hellmouth.
